You have now seen several words for celebrating a holiday. Caitlin and Josh had the following conversation with Denis about family holiday celebrations:
Ке́йтлин: | У нас до́ма отмеча́ют Рождество́.
Джо́ш: | А у нас отмеча́ют Ха́нуку.
Дени́с: | У нас отмеча́ют Но́вый год. В Росси́и э́то большо́й пра́здник. А расскажи́те, где и как америка́нцы встреча́ют Но́вый год? |
Denis's question is natural for a Russian used to thinking of New Year's as one of Russia's main family-oriented holidays. You have learned that отмеча́ть is "to celebrate," but for the holiday Но́вый год it is common to use the verb "meet," as in to "see in" or "greet" – встреча́ть: Где ты бу́дешь встреча́ть Но́вый год?
You will find out more about Но́вый год traditions in Unit 7. For now get used to thinking of it as a major holiday. There is a Russian saying to the effect that the way in which you spend the New Year's holiday (or "meet the New Year") predicts how you will spend the year itself – so it's not good to quarrel with a friend on New Year's, for example.
