Noun Case Usage

In the first eight units of Ме́жду на́ми we have worked extensively with all six cases in Russian, and you have seen them used for the following functions. In all the examples, the words in the case being discussed are all in bold.

  1. Naming items

  • Сего́дня четве́рг.
  • Today is Thursday.

  • Сейча́с ноя́брь.
  • Now it is November.

  2. Subject of a sentence introduced by э́то / вот

  • Вот Ама́нда.
  • There is Amanda.

  • Э́то Дени́с.
  • It’s Denis. / This/That is Denis.

  3. Subject and Predicate nouns in equivalency sentences

  These are sentences where the subject and the noun in the predicate are connected by “is, are, was, were” (i.e., forms of “to be”).

  • Ама́нда — америка́нка.
  • Amanda is an American.

  • Дени́с — студе́нт.
  • Denis is a student.

  • Мой оте́ц — хоро́ший музыка́нт.
  • My father is a good musician.

  These are sentences that contain the structure у ___ есть ____

  • У Ка́ти есть ча́йник.
  • Katya has a teapot.

  • I have a car.
• Accusative case – Вини́тельный паде́ж

  1. Direct object

  Direct objects are the complements of action verbs like чита́ть, писа́ть, люби́ть, фотографи́ровать, etc.

  • Ама́нда чита́ет журна́л и пи́шет конспе́кты.
  • Amanda is reading a journal and writing notes.

  • То́ни слу́шает ру́сскую му́зыку.
  • Tony is listening to Russian music.

  • Зо́я Степа́новна о́чень лю́бит Дени́са.
  • Zoya Stepanovna really loves Denis.

  2. Direct object when expressing someone's name using зову́т

  This construction requires the short adjective похо́ж + preposition на

  • Я о́чень похо́жа на ма́му.
  • I strongly resemble my mother.

  • Брат о́чень похо́ж на отца́.
  • My brother is very like my father.

  • Бо́стон совсе́м не похо́ж на Вашингто́н.
  • Boston doesn't look like Washington at all.

  1. Expressing location + prepositions в, на

  • Светла́на Бори́совна живёт в Ирку́тске.
  • Svetlana Borisovna lives in Irkutsk.

  • Ната́лья Миха́йловна рабо́тает в Росси́и.
  • Natalya Mikhailovna works in Russia.

  • Ке́йтлин занима́ется в большо́й ко́мнате.

  2. Playing an instrument + preposition на

  • Я игра́ю на роя́ле.
  • I am playing the piano.

  3. Expressing "about" + preposition о

  • Ама́нда и Же́ня говоря́т о ру́сской литерату́ре.
  • Amanda and Zhenya are talking about Russian literature.

  • Ке́йтлин пи́шет о преподава́телях.
  • Caitlin writes about her teachers.

  • Светла́на Бори́совна говори́т о ко́мнате Джо́ша.

  4. Expressing in which month, year, or century + preposition в

  • В ма́е Джош е́здил на о́зеро Байка́л.
  • In May, Josh took a trip to Lake Baikal.

  • This year Amanda is studying in Petersburg.

  5. Expressing on a form of transportation + preposition на

  • Ри́мма Ю́рьевна е́здит на рабо́ту на авто́бусе.
  • Rimma Yur'evna goes to work by bus / on the bus.

  • Amanda went to Moscow on the train.
• Genitive case – Роди́тельный паде́ж

  1. Expressing absence of a person or item

  This requires the use of нет in present tense, не́ было in past tense, and не бу́дет in future tense.

  • Сейча́с Ка́ти нет.
  • Katya isn't here now.

  • В на́шем го́роде нет университе́та.
  • In our city there is no university. / Our city has no university.

  2. Expressing the possessor of an item + preposition у

  • У Ка́ти есть ча́иник.
  • Katya has a teapot.

  • У Дени́са есть мла́дшая сестра́.
  • Denis has a younger sister.

  • У Ке́йтлин нет бра́та.
  • Caitlin doesn't have a brother.

  3. Expressing 's (possession)

  • Зо́я Степа́новна — ба́бушка Дени́са.
  • Zoya Stepanovna is Denis' grandmother.

  • Ко́мната Джо́ша о́чень ма́ленькая.
  • Josh's room is very small.

  • Мара́т Аза́тович – муж Ри́ммы Ю́рьевны.
  • Marat Azatovich is Rimma Yurievna's husband.

  4. Espressing "of" linkages

  • Где остано́вка авто́буса?
  • Where is the bus stop? (literally, "the stop of the bus")

  • Мы смотре́ли то́лько нача́ло фи́льма.
  • We only watched the start of the film.

  • Мы говори́ли о конце́ кни́ги.
  • We talked about the end of the book.

  5. Expressing relative distance

  This occurs with the phrases бли́зко от, далеко́ от, спра́ва от, сле́ва от

  • Наш дом нахо́дится далеко́ от ры́нка.
  • Our house is located far from the market.

  • Общежи́тие о́чень бли́зко от университе́та.
  • The dormitory is very close to the university.

  • Ту́мбочка стои́т спра́ва от крова́ти.
  • The nightstand is to the right of the bed.

  6. Expressing origin + prepositions из, с, and от

  • То́ни из Теха́са.
  • Tony is from Texas.

  • Ната́лья Миха́йловна из Москвы́.
  • Natalya Mikhailovna is from Moscow.

  • Я пришёл с рабо́ты.
  • I have just come from work.

  • Э́то пода́рок от ма́мы.
  • This is a present from Mom.

  7. Expressing location "at someone's place" + preposition у

  • То́ни живёт у Зо́и Степа́новны.
  • Tony lives at Zoya Stepanovna's place.

  • Джош живёт у Светла́ны Бори́совны.
  • Josh lives at Svetlana Borisovna's place.

  8. Quantity expressions

  With numbers 2, 3, 4 + genitive singular

  • В кварти́ре Зо́и Степа́новны три ко́мнаты.
  • Zoya Stepanovna's apartment has three rooms.

  • На у́лице четы́ре гра́дуса.
  • It's four degrees outside.

  
  

  With numbers 5-20, 25-30, etc. + genitive plural

  • Сейча́с пять часо́в.
  • It's now five o'clock.

  • Сего́дня два́дцать семь гра́дусов.
  • Today it's 27 degrees.

  • В чемода́не три́дцать шесть блу́зок.
  • There are 36 blouses in the suitcase.

  • В э́том до́ме 40 кварти́р.
  • There are 40 apartments in that building.

  • Биле́т сто́ит 880 рубле́й.
  • A ticket costs 880 rubles.

  9. More quantity expressions

  These occurrences use expressions like мно́го (a lot), немно́го (some of), не́сколько (a few), ма́ло (few, litte), etc.

  • На пло́щади мно́го люде́й.
  • There are a lot of people on the square.

  • У нас немно́го рабо́ты.
  • We have a bit of work.

  • У нас не́сколько хоро́ших студе́нтов.
  • We have a few good students.

  • У нас ма́ло больши́х па́рков.
  • We have few large parks.

  10. Expressing without + preposition без

  • Я пью чай без са́хара.
  • I drink tea without sugar.

  11. Complement for the verb жела́ть

  • Жела́ю вам всего́ до́брого.
  • I wish you all the best.
• Dative case – Да́тельный паде́ж

  1. Indirect object

  An indirect object is someone to whom or for whom something is done.

  • Я покупа́ю бра́ту биле́т.
  • I am buying a ticket for my brother.

  • Я дарю́ ма́ме кни́ги.
  • I give Mom books as a present.

  2. Indirect object with verbs of communication

  Verbs of communication are звони́ть, отвеча́ть, говори́ть, etc.

  • Мы ча́сто звони́м роди́телям.
  • We often call our parents.

  • Я отвеча́ю ему́ на письмо́.
  • I answer his letter.

  • Я говорю́ студе́́нтам, что экску́рсия начина́ется в де́вять.
  • I tell the students that the excursion is starting at 9.

  3. Verbs that take the dative (помога́ть, зави́довать)

  • То́ни помога́ет Зо́е Степа́новне.
  • Tony helps Zoya Stepanovna.

  • Мара́т Аза́тович не зави́дует други́м бизнесме́нам.
  • Marat Azatovich doesn't envy other businessmen.

  4. The "liker" in expressions with нра́виться/понра́виться

  • Ама́нде понра́вился Же́ня.
  • Amanda likes Zhenya.

  • Джо́шу нра́вится Ирку́тск.
  • Josh likes Irkutsk.

  5. The experiencer with certain adverbs (хо́лодно, жа́рко, ску́чно)

  • Ни́не и Джо́шу хо́лодно на катке́.
  • Nina and Josh are cold at the skating rink.

  • На́шим студе́нтам не ску́чно на заня́тиях.
  • Our students are not bored in class.

  6. Age expressions

  • Мне два́дцать лет.
  • I am 20 years old.

  • Ско́лько вам лет?
  • How old are you?

  7. With the preposition по (about, on; along)

  • Мы идём по Не́вскому проспе́кту.
  • We are headed along Nevsky Prospect.

  • Вот альбо́м по иску́сству.
  • Here is an art album.

  8. With the preposition к (to a person/a person's place)

  • Дени́с е́дет к Зо́е Степа́новне.
  • Denis is going to Zoya Stepanovna's place / to see Zoya Stepanovna.

  • То́ни идёт в го́сти к Ю́рию Никола́евичу.
  • Tony is going for a visit to Yury Nikolaevich's.

  9. With expressions of need (на́до, ну́жно)

  • Ри́мме Ю́рьевне на́до убира́ть кварти́ру.
  • Rimma Yur'evna needs to / has to clean the apartment.

  • Музыка́нтам ну́жно игра́ть ка́ждый день.
  • Musicians need to play every day.

  10. With infinitives to express "should"

  • Что нам де́лать?
  • What should we do?

  • Како́й спекта́кль студе́нту посмотре́ть?

• Instrumental case – Твори́тельный паде́ж

  1. Instrument (by what means something is done)

  • Я ем суп ло́жкой.
  • I eat soup with a spoon.

  • Я пишу́ сочине́ние ру́чкой.
  • I write my composition with a pen.

  • На́до есть пи́ццу ви́лкой и ножо́м.
  • One needs to eat pizza with a fork and knife.

  2. With the preposition с (in accompaniment with)

  • Вот Ива́н идёт с Мари́ей.
  • Here comes Ivan with Mariya.

  • Мы с бра́том пошли́ гуля́ть.
  • My brother and I went to take a walk/stroll.

  3. Complements of the verbs занима́ться, увлека́ться

  • Мы занима́емся биоло́гией.
  • We are studying biology.

  • Анто́н увлека́ется футбо́лом.
  • Anton is keen on soccer.

  4. Telling in which seasons (весно́й, ле́том) and part of the day (у́тром, днём)

  • О́сенью у нас ре́дко идёт снег.
  • In the fall, it rarely snows where we live (lit: by us).

  • У́тром я встаю́ в шесть часо́в.
  • In the morning, I get up at 6.

  5. Predicate nouns after certain verbs (быть, стать, рабо́тать)

  • Моя́ ма́ма рабо́тает врачо́м.
  • My mother works as a doctor.

  • Мой оте́ц стал хи́миком.
  • My father became a chemist.

  • Ба́бушка и де́душка бы́ли сосе́дями.
  • Grandmother and Grandfather were neighbors.

  6. Expressing location + prepositions пе́ред, за, под, над, ме́жду

  • Пе́ред до́мом стои́т но́вая маши́на.
  • In front of the house stands a new car.

  7. Wishing a happy holiday with поздравля́ть/поздра́вить + preposition с

  • С пра́здником!
  • Happy Holiday!

  • Поздравля́ю с Но́вым го́дом!
  • Happy New Year!

  8. Complement to the verb боле́ть (to be ill with)

  • Ама́нда боле́ет гри́ппом.
  • Amanda is sick with the flu.

  • Джош боле́л на́сморком.
  • Josh is sick with a head cold.
