Irkutsk is a city of approximately 600,000 people, which is located on the Angara River in Siberia. The city was founded in 1661, and became a vibrant cultural center in the wake of the Decembrist Revolt of 1825, when a large number of noblemen were sent into exile in the area. Located along the Trans-Siberian Railway (Транссиби́рская магистра́ль), the city is known for its wonderfully preserved wooden architecture and its proximity to Lake Baikal (о́зеро Байка́л), the largest freshwater lake in the world.
