Kazan’ is a city of approximately 1.2 million people, which is located on the Volga and Kazanka rivers. While there is some debate as to when the city was officially founded (and by whom), Kazan' officially celebrated its millenium in 2005, and frequently refers to itself as both "the third city" and "the third capital of Russia". Among the city's notable landmarks is the Kazan’ Kremlin, a walled fortress that contains both the 16th century Orthodox Annunciation Cathedral (Благове́щенский собо́р) and the recently built Qolşärif Mosque (мече́ть Кул-Шари́ф), which seeks to recreate a 16th century mosque that was destroyed when the city fell to Ivan the Terrible.
